Music Over Mind in Schools

Music Over Mind is KEYJ Foundation’s flagship school-based programme, developed to support the emotional wellbeing, self-expression and positive development of young people within vulnerable communities across the Cape Flats.

Developed in response to the growing need for safe and supportive spaces for young people, the programme combines music, mentorship and mental wellness support to create accessible environments where learners can express themselves, build confidence, experience belonging and access meaningful support.

Launched as a pilot programme in 2026, Music Over Mind was designed to move beyond once-off events toward more sustained and consistent engagement within school environments. Through a combination of music education, peer connection, mental wellness support and ongoing mentorship, the programme aims to create meaningful opportunities for young people to express themselves, strengthen resilience and navigate positive pathways for their future.

WHAT WE DO

0 1

Inspiring School Activations

We kick off with powerful, music-driven events led by well-known ambassadors, creating safe, engaging spaces to open conversations around mental health and reduce stigma.

0 2

Building Lasting Support

We establish practical, visible support systems within schools, including:

  • Peer Helper programmes, where learners are trained to support one another with guidance from professionals
  • The Kind Heart Bench, a safe, symbolic space encouraging connection and help-seeking
  • Voices of Strength engagements, where relatable ambassadors share lived experiences of resilience, healing and overcoming adversity to help reduce stigma and encourage young people to feel less alone in seeking support
  • Ongoing workshops and check-ins, delivered with mental health partners
0 3

After-School Music Programme

We provide structured music education, instruments and mentorship, offering learners a positive outlet for expression, skill-building, and personal growth. The programme culminates in live performances that celebrate progress and build confidence.
